Restaurant on wheels to be placed on any station on Kalka heritage line | Chandigarh News


Chandigarh: Considering safety of passengers, Ambala division is now planning to station restaurant on wheels, a specially designed coach, on any of the station on the Kalka-Shimla heritage section.

A proposal has been chalked out by the division and talks are on with various travel agents to suggest the station where it should be placed by the division.

Sources said the division had changed the plan of giving this coach to a group of passengers. As during the trial, an issue was highlighted by the team of officials that the chairs and tables installed in the coach were uncomfortable.

The chairs are not designed in a way that passengers could sit on it and travel for five to six hours.

Sources in the Ambala division said recently, an official from the Kalka station also sent a communication that a garage should be provided to station the restaurant coach as it had expensive equipment like coffee maker, microwave and washroom accessories and could be stolen if the coach was stationed at a yard.

Another issue which was raised in the letter was that a cop from the railway police force (RPF) should also be deployed at the coach.

Dinesh Chandra Sharma, divisional railway manager, Ambala division, said the division was working on the plan to station the coach on any of the station on the Kalka-Shimla heritage section where it can be used as a restaurant by passengers. He said it was found during the trial that the chairs and tables were uncomfortable for a long journey, considering which there was a change in the plan by the division for the special coach.

He said the division was also planning to keep the coach stationed at different stations from time-to-time in order to facilitate passengers.

Himachal Pradesh chief minister Jai Ram Thakur, on March 8, dedicated this coach to tourists, which was lying in a workshop. To give it a restaurant look, it will be opened from booth the sides.

Water proof curtains will also be installed on both the sides of the coach. The coach will also have four tables and a set of three chairs with each table, which will be installed around the teak pillars in the coach.

Considering the demand of passengers, the coach will also have facility for dry pantry which could be booked by passengers and they could cook on their own.

The pantry is designed with modern equipment, including coffee and tea vending machines, processed food cold storage, microwave and washing facility for utensils.
