A new assisted living facility is under construction at The Cottages at Woodland Terrace located at 1010 Fernwood Drive and is slated to open early next year.
The new residence is an extension of The Cottages’ independent living community and will provide professional care from certified nursing assistants and one charge nurse. Medicine supervision will be monitored by medical staff.
“Adding an assistant living facility has always been in the plan,” said Nancy Fullilove, executive director. “The land was set aside for this project at the inception of the community in 2004.”
Fullilove said residents and guests will be greeted in a large lobby with an impressive fireplace and beautiful furnishings that bring a feeling of home to the facility. Attractive wood floors will run throughout the residence and floor to ceiling windows will bring natural light into each space.
The facility will have 33 suites ranging from studio size (two available) to two bedrooms, two bath and one bedroom, one bath. Each unit has a foyer and a good size bathroom with a walk-in closet. The bathrooms are accommodating to seniors with raised toilets and walk-in showers.
Every room has large windows facing toward either the outside or into one of the outdoor courtyards to allow for maximum natural light. The kitchenette has a built-in microwave and refrigerator with a freezer, but no cooking will be allowed in the rooms. Three meals a day will be provided to the residents, and they will be allowed to have a coffee maker in their rooms.
Amenities at the residence include a salon, full library, activity rooms with game tables, and a private dining room where special events can be held such as birthdays and anniversaries. Three outdoor courtyards are built into the design. Two courtyards will be with grass and natural shrubbery and concrete paths; the remaining yard will be fitted with astroturf.
According to Fullilove, the facility dining room will have room to sit 66 people that will allow for guests and residents of the independent living cottages to purchase lunch (the main meal of the day) and dine with the assistant living residents. The meals can also be purchased and delivered to the door of the independent living resident.
“The solarium activity center is simply gorgeous with floor to ceiling windows and French doors leading into the hallway,” said Fullilove. “That will be where we do a lot of our independent living activities, and the front porch will have many rocking chairs for those who want to spend time outside.”
Resident activities will be targeted to the needs of the seniors living in the assistant living facility. Church services, bingo, board and card games, Bible study and arts and crafts are just a few of the activities planned.
Security is provided through The Cottages, which is a gated community, plus cameras are installed along each road for added safety. Guests will be required to sign in and out in the lobby reception desk of the center.
Applicants will be screened for mental impairment and those with mild dementia will be given a security tracking bracelet for safety. The residence will not have a memory support unit, and all applicants will need to be able to pass the physical evaluation.
According to Fullilove, the fee structure has not been set yet, but there will be a flat fee for residents. The assisted living facility is on a monthly fee payment schedule and is not a buy-in.
One of The Cottages owners, Randy Griffin, said he is pleased that he and his partners can provide a luxurious assistant living residence for seniors in need of such services.
“We are fulfilling our promise made when we first built The Cottages to create an assistant living facility worthy of the community’s standards. We want to thank Century Bank & Trust for providing the funding for this project.”
