Set to open on June 15, Daily Driver brings together a cheesemaker, bagel baker, coffee roaster, industrial designer, and a Marin-based dairy farm and creamery, and they’ll be introducing wood-oven-baked bagels to a bagel-starved populace.
The ambitious project at 2535 Third Street (at 22nd), includes a handsome tiled coffee counter and a bagel chute that ferries bagels from the oven into a striking, yellow-painted bagel storage tree. In addition to freshly roasted coffee from Oakland-based Red Bay Coffee, who will have their own on-site roaster, Daily Driver will be home to a large-scale butter-making operation. The butter room, head up by cheesemaker Hadley Kreitz, will produce fresh, European-style cultured butter daily.
As Eater reports, Kreitz will also be churning out ghee, ricotta, cream cheese, and quark (a yogurt-like, German-style cheese). And there will be fresh goat cheese from Toluma Farms and Tomales Farmstead Creamery in West Marin, which are owned by Daily Driver’s other partners, Tamara Hicks and David Jablons
Kreitz’s husband, David Kreitz, serves as head bagel maker and designer, and he plans to put out about 7,250 bagels per day.
There’s also a full-service cafe at Daily Driver, with things like bagel sandwiches, bagel dogs, sweet and savory quark bowls, salads, and whey-cooked bulgur tabbouleh.
The place will offer extended brunch hours on weekends, but otherwise look for Daily Driver to open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, starting June 15.
